A quick glance over at the Steam charts reveals that the game peaked with 1102 players when it launched in July, and struggles to have even half that number a month later. Rocket Arena is unfortunately hamstrung by being too chaotic in action and awkward controls, which could also explain why no one wants to play it. It’s a pity, because the 3V3 hero shooter has some solid ideas and I love the direction that it went in for its missile mania. Rocket Arena is one such example, a game that is completely fine at best, but has almost no audience willing to invest in its rocket-powered elimination matches. Imagine pouring literal years into a project, only to be met with a wall of indifference once the game finally releases. Just not yet. It’s fine to not like a game or to be entirely uninterested in one, but man does my heart still bleed for the people who make these products.

If the game seems to be received well, the player base begins to take off, and Final Strike proves themselves to be an attentive and thoughtful developer with their finger on the pulse of the community, Rocket Arena may very well be worth the 30 or so bucks it costs.

The game’s damage system borrows from Super Smash Bros. In Rocket League, you have to think more about where you’re placing each shot, and are rewarded for sound tactical decision-making. Because each shot has a minor cooldown, you’re punished for the common FPS-honed instinct to hold down fire and track your opponent. Some hit harder, have different trajectories, different blast radii, and other special effects. Each character’s rockets have a different play-style. Indeed, the game utilizes a unique mix of Super Smash Bros and other Hero Shooters, placing a greater emphasis on careful aim than relentless bullet-spamming.Įach of the game’s 10 playable heroes relies on some sort of rocket launcher - indeed, no other weapons are present in the game - and their own unique abilities to deal damage to enemy players and move around the compact map. Rocket Arena’s gameplay itself seems to garner a few complaints.
